Oct-18-2009 UBC Apple Festival @ Library Owl

UBC Apple Festival is a great event each year at UBC Botanical Garden. People from all over Vancouver will come to visit the apple carnival. The entrance fee is 2 dollars. For 3 dollars, visitors can buy a ticket to enter apple tasting tent to taste up to 60 kinds of apples. There are also vendors to sell apple related products, such as apple trees, apples (CAD$6 / bag, 6apples / bag), apple chips (CAD$5 for a small bag, around 200g) and apple pie (CAD$4 / piece).

每年10月間，UBC植物園不可錯過的盛會是蘋果節。當天來自溫哥華各地的游客紛紛湧入。基本消費為入場費2元，蘋果品嚐費3元。如果想吃義工們所製作的蘋果派，需要再花4元。但基本上，以5塊錢能試吃到60種蘋果，學到些蘋果的知識，也頂有趣的。

在現場還有販賣蘋果樹苗、各類蘋果（富士、GALA、GOLDEN GALA等等族繁不及輩載)、蘋果派、蘋果乾（類似薯片的蘋果乾）。也有給小朋友玩樂的專區。

The white tent is the apple tasting area. People start to line up for their session to get in.

This is a tent provided by Okanagan Apple farmers. They provides some apples for people to taste for free.

The apples there are new kinds of apples and are hard to find in markets.

The association asked participants to taste two kinds of apples, and write down the number of apple that one like most. The association will then decide which apple to go to mass production and go onto market someday.

Okanagan的蘋果農會在現場舉辦品嚐會，提供遊客品嚐尚未在市場上大量販售的蘋果。這次提供的是Nicola, Aurora Golden Gala, SPA 493 (尚未正式命名的新蘋果）。

現場也提供2種新品種蘋果切片供民眾品嚐後投票，得票數高的將會試圖大量生產。

Apple Display Area, where displays all kinds of apples that are grown in British Columbia. Some of the species are rare, only 1 or 2 trees still exist in someone's back yard. Volunteers travel around British Columbia to collect all the apples (around 200 kinds).

在蘋果展示區有卑詩省所生長的所有蘋果的展示，約有200種左右，有許多蘋果是市面上所沒有的，有些甚至全省只有一兩株，生長在某家的庭園裡。所有的蘋果都是由義工至各地搜集而來的。

很貴的apple pie...但是可以看得出來是真材實料，裡頭還有肉桂粉增添香味。

Apple tasting.

Each session last for 30 minutes. The only thing one can do in the tent is to eat as many kinds of apples as possible. There were about 60 kinds apples in the tent, and some were really popular and nearly ran out in the last session I joined. (I wasn't sure whether to buy a ticket to tast, so I bought the last couple of tickets before they were sold out.)

Volunteers will cut small pieces of apples for visitors to taste. Some volunteers have abundant knowledge on apples, they would even give out free advice on what kind of apple one should buy to make pies.
