UBC Farm is at the very south of the campus. There lives an abundant wild life.

Ways to get there:

Take any bus that will take you to Westbrook Village or 16th Ave, including Bus #25, 33, 41, 49...etc.

Then walk down the road to somewhere that there is no population.

搭乘任何可抵達16th Ave或Westbrook Village的公車，下車後順著Westbrook Mall一直走，看到UBC農場的標示後右轉繼續走，基本上沒什麼人煙可言。

The reason to visit UBC Farm on this particular day was that there were tours about UBC Farm Heritage Orchad due to the Apple Festival.

選在這天拜訪UBC農場，主要是因為UBC蘋果祭，UBC農場有舉辦UBC農場蘋果園的導覽活動。

The tour was given by Sarah Belanger, the founder of apple orchard. The orchard started as a student's Directed Study Project in 2005. The orchard tries to preserve all kinds of apples that were or are grown in British Columbia since mass production has deprived the varieties of apples people could see daily. Right now, there are around 60 species of apples and 120 trees in the orchard. The apples were planted according to their names alphabetically. They did lost some trees due to diseases without using any kinds of pesticide.

Actually, Vancouver is not a good place for apples to grow due to the rain and warmth. All of the trees at UBC Farm Orchard were grown by grafting. As a result, there might be a threat if the roots got diseased. The biggest growers of apples in BC are in Okanagan, where is more like a desert comparing to Vancouver.

UBC蘋果園是從學生的專題計畫開始萌芽的，其目的在於保存BC省的蘋果文化及所種植的品種。在市場壓力下，人們所能見到的蘋果種類並不多，而蘋果園裡大約有60種品種的蘋果樹，約120株蘋果，依據品名排序種植。由於不使用農藥的緣故，有些樹因常見的蘋果疾病死掉了。所有UBC農場的蘋果樹都是使用接枝法所種植的。

溫哥華因其雨量和溫暖並不適合蘋果生長。在卑詩省，主要的蘋果生產地在Okanagan，氣候相關乾燥。

Ms. Belanger went to Okanagan to ask apple farmers how to grow apples trees, and apply certain techniques in the orchard. For example, the ground near the roots were removed of all the grass. But she also apply an more organic way to grow her apples, since most apple farmers would just kill all the grasses by pesticide so that apple trees can gain most of the nutrition from earth.
