As a person spent years in Taiwan and becoming sick of the government, there is always doubts that what Taiwanese government is doing to promote Taiwan in the world. In fact, there is somthing they are trying to do, although I am not really sure about the effects.

I've seen a skytrain carriages painted with advertisements of travelling to Taiwan. Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance to take a photo of it.

There are speeches or forums held at UBC with authors from Taiwan, such as Lung Ying Tai (龍應台), Liu Ka Shiang (劉克襄), Chu Tien Wen (朱天文), and Ko Yu Fen (柯裕棻). All the talks were supported by UBC Asian Centre. Professor Lung's speech is on Oct 18, 2009 at Chan Centre. Unfortunately I only saw the speech in Madarin online. Professor Lung had 2 speech at UBC, one in Madarin, the other in English. The Taiwan Writers Forum was in Madarin. It's kind of fun to meet the authors in person. Unfortunately, from what I have encountered, most of the people in the audience had some backgrounds in speaking Madarin. Even the director of the forum (a UBC professor) also suggested to hold the event in Madarin. I'm not so sure about the effects of this though. If Taiwanese people would like to let others see us, there should be more efforts in attracting more people instead of having a small talk in Madarin. One of the attendees made a point in her experience of translating Madarin works into English world. There was indeed too less efforts in promoting the creativity of Taiwanese authors. Ms. Chu Tien Wen also made a point in the disadvantage of promoting Taiwanese films. She talked about how referees saw films of China and films of Taiwan, saying that due to historic background (the cultural revolution and everything), people tend to give a higher score for Chinese films while Taiwanese films were in fact much better.

Canada, as a multi-culture country, do recognize Taiwan more than the others. I've seen a description board in Vanier Park in the corner of English Bay wrote about how many containers were shipped into Canada, and where they were from. Taiwan and its flag was on the description board, along with USA, Japan, and China.
